SPOTLIGHT

Another Language Performing Arts Company is proud to represent Salt Lake City and the state of Utah at the prestigious Digital Resources for the Humanities and Arts 2008 Conference September 14-17, 2008, held at Cambridge University, Great Britain.
This year's conference theme 'New Communities of Knowledge and Practice' will promote discussion around new collaborative environments, collective knowledge and redefining disciplinary boundaries. Establish a site for mutually creative exchanges of knowledge. Promote discussion around new collaborative environments and collective knowledge. Encourage and celebrate the connections and tensions within the liminal spaces that exist between the Arts and Humanities.
The paper, The Poetics of Challenge - Developing Artistic Works in an Emerging Digital Tool Set, co-written by Elizabeth and Jimmy Miklavcic, will be presented at the conference. A summary of the paper is given below:
The Access GridR video conference communications software is an advancing set of elements combined into an amazing and powerful tool kit that can be employed to create distributed performances that involve a variety of sites throughout the world. This exciting, emergent and creative vehicle can bring about a host of fascinating challenges. Ironically, the first among them and the most important is communication. Sharing and coordinating ideas among a group of local collaborators is difficult enough. Distribute the same collaborators across the globe, share and coordinate ideas through a 320 by 240 pixel portal and the difficulty is compounded.
The evolving artistry takes on multi-layered considerations within the challenge of learning how to swim, so-to-speak, in this emerging medium. Through distributed meetings that explore the concept of the InterPlay project, the artographer integrates combinations of content contributed by the various participating Access Grid sites in order to create and frame a viable and presentable work. The artographer, an expanded definition in this context, is one who integrates and maps the skills of performer, director, choreographer, composer, visual artist, cinematographer, technologist, lecturer and more, to the InterPlay process.
The InterPlay series is a partnership between Another Language Performing Arts Company and the University of Utah Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC). The mission of Another Language is to combine different art forms in innovative ways and to broaden access to community arts education with the aid of today's communications technology. This mission is symbiotic to the investigative role and uses of the Access Grid now taking place at CHPC.
This research and professional partnership brings about interesting problems from varying viewpoints. From the research aspect at the University of Utah, exploration takes place and, by its very nature, is a trial and error process. Integrating this process within a professional production where the company's reputation depends on the quality of work presented, can be two very divergent goals. It is a challenge to value both extremes.
The research in utilizing the Access Grid infrastructure as a performance tool began in 1999 with an emerging public InterPlay performance in 2003. There have been many unique challenges that have multiplied with every subsequent performance.
The purpose of this paper is to examine artistic, technical and production challenges; through this examination more opportunities are created to meet and address those challenges.
This inspirational and informative conference will be an exciting endeavor and provides Another Language the honor to share the company's innovative work in the InterPlay series.
