Description
After staging What? for the 1992 Another Language In Concert performance, the movement felt good, but the costumes no longer felt right. Dated. The dance had been in the Company repertoire for seven years. I made a decision to simplify. No special make-up, and just black pants and t-shirts. This decision worked, but also, focused the intension of the dance differently. It was still about communication, or the lack of it, but by casting a man and a woman the intension was now between the couple. How the couple was having difficulty communicating and the frustration that created. That year, as the Company was rehearsing for an Artspace fundraiser, which was to be an outdoor improvisation during the event, I fell in a hole and severely sprained my ankle. I had to be rushed to the hospital. We had two weeks to fix things for our upcoming performance at the Utah Arts Festival. Michael Larkin stepped up. He was an incredible performer with a very intense quality, this quality works better for the first solo, so Sarah taught Michael her role and I taught Sarah mine. After two weeks of hustling they were ready and did an excellent job. This video documentation if of that performance at the Delta Center Stage. What? A Choreographic Evolution DVD traces this dance from its inception in 1984 through its final performance in 1995. The project DVD is free to educators upon request and is also available in the Education-Interactive area of AnotherLanguage.org. | |
