SPOTLIGHT

InterPlay: Carnivale was performed March 29-30, 2008 at the Intermountain Network and Scientific Computation Center Auditorium on the University of Utah campus. The Utah performance consisted of six actors, four camera operators, a performance manager, sound engineer, Access GridR node operator, and digital director.

In West Chicago, TRECC participation consisted of composer Joe Reitzer sending his music compositions live during the performance. Rochester Institute of Technology's participation under the direction of Marla Schweppe and Joe Geigle consisted of four technicians providing live virtual puppets and a carnival audience in front of a green screen, responding to the action of the Carnies' performances.

The kinetics of the screen display, developed by Mike Daley of Cardiff University, Wales, took place before the live performance and was manipulated in real-time by Utah's node operator, Sam Liston. The local Utah audience doubled from last year and it was nice to see a full house! Interest in and understanding of the concept of distributed performance is growing.

An in-depth article about the InterPlay series, Six Seasons of Access Grid Research, is available. Many challenges remain to be met, but we are already in pre-production for the next InterPlay: AnARTomy. See you next year!!
The Education section of the Another Language website has been updated and new information is now available. Categories consist of Classes and Workshops, Papers and Presentations, Publications, Interviews, and Interactive content. Descriptions of available classes that are taught by company directors Elizabeth and Jimmy Miklavcic include Telematic Distributed Performance Workshop, Communications on the Access Grid, Performing for Internet Broadcasting and others. Abstracts of papers and presentations, written and created from 2004, are on hand.
Some papers and presentations are accessible as PDF documents or Power Point presentations however newer papers are not yet provided since active presentations regarding those projects work are still taking place. Publications consist of a variety of articles that have been written from 2005 although earlier work will eventually become available. InterPlay: Performing on a High Tech Wire was accepted for publication by the Body Space and Technology Journal at Brunel University, in West London and can be accessed through our publications area. Interviews by Doug Fox with Great DanceTM and Brian Staker of The Awkward Hour are also available. We hope you will take a few moments to check out the wealth of material in this updated area of www.anotherlanguage.org.

InterPlay: Loose Minds in a Box DVD is now available! Another Language Performing Arts Company performed InterPlay: Loose Minds in a Box, an unprecedented real-time national collaboration, at the Los Angeles Convention Center for the world renowned ACM SIGGRAPH 2005 computer graphics conference on August 3-4. Another Language was invited to be a part of the introduction of the Access Grid into the Emerging Technologies program at SIGGRAPH as a result of its pioneering performances.

Performing together in InterPlay: Loose Minds in a Box from their respective states were Scott Deal (Alaska) Charles Nichols (Montana), Tina Shah, Helen Kostis (Illinois), T.J. Rogers, Joe Hayes, Carol Cunningham (Indiana), Nadja Masura, and Peter Rogers (Maryland) and Erik Brown (Utah). Performing locally in the Los Angeles Convention center were Beth and Jimmy Miklavcic (Utah), Miho Aoki (Alaska) and Dioselin Gonzalez (Indiana). InterPlay: Loose Minds in a Box was an exceptional demonstration of how the Access Grid technology can be used to fulfill artistic ideas. The ArtGrid consortium stepped up to the challenge and met with great success. This performance, under the leadership of Beth and Jimmy Miklavcic, showcased the pioneering work coming out of the state of Utah. Another Language could not have done this with out the technical support at SIGGRAPH 2005 and each remote site.

Volunteers help Another Language in countless ways. Many people who participate in an InterPlay performance volunteer their valuable time and expertise to these projects and we are so grateful for their interest in this work. In addition to the performance volunteers from remote sites we have many people that help here in Utah. This year Matthew Loel T. Hepworth took over five hundred photographs of the performance and he generously made them available to the company.

Fifty of Matt's images are available in the public area of the website and over two hundred images are available in the membership area of the website. During the performance, volunteers from the company's board of directors and others took care of the front of house; Victoria Rasmussen, Sylvia Ring, Jan Abramson, Libbi Mansell, Kathy and Darrell Valburg. Nancy Newren volunteered to do what ever needed to be done such as blowing up helium balloons, setting up props, and much more. Ryan Lucas (The Bearded Woman) spent many weekends volunteering his time to help build flats and crates for the performance. InterPlay: Carnivale was a very involved project to assemble and bring to the public and we could not have done it without the help of the volunteers. Thank you to everyone who gave so much!
