SPOTLIGHT

InterPlay: AnARTomy directed by Jimmy and Elizabeth Miklavcic, was performed March 27-29 and April 3-5, 2009 at the Intermountain Network and Scientific Computation Center on the University of Utah campus. The performance was a celebration of the art of the body and featured two phenomenal dancers, Theresa Kulikowski and Patrick Barnes. The response from the Utah audience was extremely favorable.
Additional Utah performers and contributors included Cynthia Overman, Brigham Young University Professor in Animation, and three of her students Laura Smith, Jacob Wyatt and Anthony Holden in the "Animation Cafe." Their amazing drawings both in sketchbooks and interactively using Adobe Photoshop were streamed through the Access Grid TM during the performance, creating the vision of blending art forms into a cohesive artistic statement.
JOsh Bross, streamed live, a 3D animated skeleton, modeled by Daniel Van Tassell and animated by JOsh. This additional body viewpoint created a multi-visual experience where responses from the audience included that it was like looking inside the dancers as they moved. Poetry written and performed by Elizabeth Miklavcic introduced the tone of each of the three scenes.

Distributed participants included Miho Aoki from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, who created the flash animated backgrounds and participated in the live performance by drawing the action of the moving-sculpture dancers. Professor Scott Deal, at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the Tavel Arts and Technology Center in Indiana, created the dynamic musical component with "Big Robot." Members of "Big Robot" include Scott Deal, Jordan Munson and Michael Drews with technologist Chuiyuan Meng. The movements of dancer, Brian Buck, from Long Island University, New York were quick, sharp and jittery creating a fascinating juxtaposition against the slow, restrained quality of the moving sculptures in Utah.
Ben Spruce, a mime artist from Cardiff, Wales in a period costume and completely painted in white created a further dimension to the performance. Ben's movements reacted and responded to the movements of the dancers, to which audience members had a variety of responses - from "What was that?" to "He seemed to represent the restrictions of society as the antithesis of the revealed body's of the moving sculptures." The hard work of Mike Daley, Senior Technician/Professional Tutor for the School of Computer Science at Cardiff University's e-Science Center is the moving force behind Cardiff's participation in the InterPlay performances.

The technology teams from all the participating sites were invaluable. The Digital Mix, created by Jimmy Miklavcic at the University of Utah, tied the multi-site imagery together into an interconnected dreamscape. Colin McDermott (Access Grid node operator), Travis Eberhard (audio engineer), Cory Anderson (director of photography), Russel Henricksen (documentarian), camera operators Christopher Lee and Tauna Price, plus the many technologists at all participating sites brought their talents to construct this complex and unique event. A special thank you goes to Jon Weisberg, Colin and Paul Heath who helped us test the interactive drawing component during technical rehearsals.
We are excited to be hosted by The Leonardo at the Utah Arts Festival on Thursday June 25th, Saturday June 27th and Sunday June 28th at 7:00pm. We will recreate the cinematic display element of InterPlay: AnARTomy. An audience discussion will take place after the presentation. We hope to see all of you there!
