This work is a whimsical look at the creative decisions one makes after one avoids first inclinations. It also incorporates Jimmy's past experiences in the Williamstown High School Marching Band, replacing traditional instruments with squeeze toys and PVC pipe.

The performers start by singing, "The trash I live in is the trash I make. The trash I make is the trash that is offered to me, in slick packages! And is guaranteed to make my life more attractive to me." As for the rest of the dance, many childhood and early memories have inspired much of the movement and sound. Playing with squeeze toys, marching in the high school band, and hearing Harry Parch for the first time while working at the pizzeria all surfaced to influence the choreography of this piece.

It was also very fortunate that composer Jon Scoville allowed us to use his music for Avoid Your First Inclinations. It provided an open framework in which the obscure movement could easily flow within the sonic environment.
