The motivation to explore the subjects of aloneness and loneliness was based on Elizabeth Miklavcic's childhood experiences of trying to study and read in a home where there was constant noise. Just when she would find a little pease and quiet, the radio would be turned on to blasting, or the television, which would make it really difficult to concentrate.

The noise-makers performed by Company Members Chara Huckins, Sarah Hudelson, Michael Larkin, and Jimmy Miklavcic, depicted in this dance surround the loner (portrayed by Elizabeth). With no awareness as to their effect on her, they continue to subject her to various levels of noise.

She eventually tries to join in with the group, but it doesn't work out, and she really just wants to read her book and be alone. There is a difference between being alone and lonely, but the experience and emotion are often intertwined and difficult to separate.
