Perennial Rhythm was choreographed by Eleni Kambouris. The work draws on the persistent rhythm of misfortune and recovery, or more dramatically, death and rebirth. We often suffer setbacks in our daily life and we seem to recover from these moments. Ms. Kambouris touches on various influential emotional milestones in her life while trying to find ways to overcome effects that affect her. The quartet is performed in minimal light, to support the depicted emotional stress. The structure of the work is also quite off balance as a whole. The majority of the dance occurs on stage left, until, near the end, one dancer crosses over to stage right into brightness for a very short time, only to immediately return to the group. It's not known what Ms. Kambouris's motivation is for this design, but by keeping the group to one side of the stage space demonstrates the isolation that one experiences during a time of emotional loss, life stress, or even illness.
